The business leaders interviewed have been, for some time, convinced of the transformative potential and impact of AI, not just for productivity and operational efficiency but for radical business change. They recognize that AI can also help optimize operational costs following re-localization.

Most of these leaders are agnostic about the sourcing of AI technology and expertise. Some point to the dominance of the US and the advantages of accessing US technology for competitive advantage, but others also mention the huge progress made by China in AI innovation. Most leaders regret the confusion and lack of global consistency surrounding AI regulation, but they believe they can work around it.

“Where I’m excited about it is just the productivity side of it. But I think there’s a lot of cultural and mindset shifts that have to happen.”

“AI can help us make our company so much more efficient. And we only know today maybe a glimpse of what the efficiency could be.”

“A huge 80% of the world’s AI compute happens in the US, not in China. They’ve built a bunch of data centers, and they’re empty.”

“Different rules for AI in [the] US versus Europe. That means a little more difficulty for us in how to deal with that.”
[Media group]

“I think there’s, as well, a brain-drain effect [from the US], [in] which we see the top professionals seeking more stable, more innovation-friendly environments.”
[Entertainment group]

“I just look at the numbers, I look at the demand, and I listen to my customers, and Europe is a secondary market for AI, particularly for generative AI.”
[Digital group]

“At the moment, obviously, there’s some fragmentation in AI regulations. If we want to play in all these places, then it could well be we have to ultimately branch [out] and have different partners, different technology ecosystems also.”
[Healthcare group]

“When we touch the area of AI, we are today working with smaller Chinese AI start-ups and integrating their technology with ours. That gives us, if you will, already a more customized and more locally appreciated solution. We shouldn’t underestimate the potential to innovate outside the US.”
[Healthcare group]

“Due to the regulation and also access to the technology, it gives you a competitive advantage to be in the US to eventually test it before taking it to Europe.”
[Energy group]

“We’re basically agnostic on technology sourcing, China or US or both.”
[Logistics group]

“We focused on having a European ERP system supplier.”
